Walmart says it will be a founding donor for the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and is giving $5 million to the Smithsonian Institution for its construction.
Established by Congress back in 2003, the NMAAHC will be the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African-American life, art, history and culture. Scheduled to start construction next year, plans call for it to open for visitors in 2015. The $500-million project will be on five acres adjacent to the Washington Monument on the National Mall.
