Pure Michigan is powered by a $27.4 million state tourism budget — the biggest among Midwestern states. What does Ohio have? Gov. John Kasich wants to take the current $5 million
general-revenue fund allocation for Ohio tourism and double it through different means. That would still pale in comparison to Michigan. But at least it would make it competitive with the rest of the
Midwestern states.
Kentucky spends $11.8 million; West Virginia $7.3 million; Pennsylvania $5.1 million; and Indiana $2.7 million. The average is about $10 million in
fiscal year 2011, according to the U.S. Travel Association.
