Consumers Are Now The "Couch Octopus"

Speaking at the Boston Ad Club's Lures of Retail event, eMarketer CEO Geoff Ramsey said, "The consumer is no longer just a couch potato." Instead, Ramsey calls them them the "couch octopus" because of all of the multitasking they do.

Ramsey says that most multitasking activity is non-content related. If a user is watching a TV show and multitasking with their iPad, odds are they aren't doing anything directly related to the show they are watching. "Users expect you to keep up with all of their multitasking," says Ramsey. He then challenged the audience by asking, "Can you keep up?"
