DirecTV Expands Cross-Platform Reach

DirecTV is adding another car to the TV Everywhere train. The satellite operator said it is making a slew of networks’ programming available on-demand outside-the-home on multiple devices.

Networks included are operated by Viacom (including MTV and Teen Nick) and Scripps Networks (including HGTV and Travel Channel) along with others.

The programming is available to subscribers for free via DirecTV.com on PCs and Macs, as well as Apple and Android devices.

DirecTV is also expanding its live in-home streaming option via an iPad or iPhone to a line-up with 60-plus networks. DIY and Ion were recently added. Subscribers must have an HD DVR connected to the Web.

Tony Goncalves, a DirecTV senior vice president, stated that the company is “making significant investments in the multi-screen space and are committed to developing an ‘everywhere’ product.”

The DirecTV-owned Audience Network, which carries “Damages,” has been streamed live outside the home via an iPad app since September.

DirecTV had nearly 20 million U.S. customers at the end of the third quarter, a slight increase from the year before. Offering TV Everywhere-like functionality is becoming standard for distributors. DirecTV hasn’t inked a deal to offer the Watch ESPN app, which allows live viewing of ESPN programming outside the home.
