Scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of Android and sending malicious emails that distribute Android scareware. These apps use scare tactics to trick users into paying for unnecessary services. Security vendor FireEye has identified a spam campaign that kicked off on September 6th and continues to show up in inboxes. The spam emails claim to be failed package delivery notifications from USPS or electronic wedding invitations and link to websites. The email solicits recipients to download an Android package (APK) file called LabelReader.apk which will install FakeDefender, a tool that pretends to be a commercial Android security product but is really spam.
