ISIS Versus Social Media

ISIS supporters on Sunday called on jihadists around the world to kill Twitter employees because of the company’s frequent blocking of their social media accounts. “Your virtual war on us will cause a real war on you,” reads an online post addressed to Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and shared by ISIS supporters. – BuzzFeed, 3/1/15

The terrorist group ISIS has attacked Facebook for gathering too much unnecessary information about users, a Web site associated with the group announced today. “Your invasive data collection, frequent dropping of cookies, and general creepiness are an abomination in the eyes of all true believers,” the message read in part. It also attacked Facebook’s terms of service, “ever changing as the desert sands,” and recent moves to limit organic reach. – 4/1/15

An angry statement from ISIS supporters posted on an online forum for Web designers took issue with Instagram’s failure to introduce new photo filter options as promised earlier this month. “What use are Sierra or Brannan in a desert setting that is already washed out for lighting? Lo-fi and Kelvin, truly, they are abominations. God willing Instagram will see the need for more ‘everyday’ filters before it is too late.” – 5/1/15

An email sent to Tumblr’s complaints department by ISIS supporters contains a fatwa against recent changes in the default image size for pictures on the blog site, condemning the site’s photo team to the “fires of Hell” if they do not immediately restore the old proportions: “For all the photos and gifs posted before now are pixelated and distorted, and we do not have time to go back and re-post every single one; no one asked for this update, and it is an abomination.” The fatwa suggested Tumblr focus on improving its mobile interface instead. – 6/1/15
