Cavan Tapped As Fansided.com EIC

Time Inc.’s FanSided, a network of sites dedicated to sports fans, is adding the position of editor-in-chief to its flagship FanSided.com. Jim Cavan, who most recently served as senior editor of The Cauldron, will be the first to take on the role.

Time Inc. bought FanSided.com and its 300 affiliated sites last May and made it part of their Sports Illustrated Group.

Cavan will oversee editorial operations and direction, as well as work closely with Sports Illustrated to “fully leverage the company’s promotional resources and reach more fans,” according to a statement from the company.

Cavan tweeted: “Together, with the folks at @SInow (10-year-old me just screamed with glee), we’ve got some game-changing ideas stewing on the front burner.”

He also suggested he will start up a weekly column.

Before The Cauldron, Cavan was a featured columnist at Bleacher Report and has written for The New York Times, Grantland, ESPN.com and SB Nation.

The FanSided network has announced a string of recent hires and promotions. Mike Dyce, previously managing editor of FanSided.com, is now senior director of editorial operations. He will oversee the launch of new FanSided properties and the development of content.

Ian Levy was named senior NBA editor Ian Levy, Ani Bundel is now entertainment editor and Kayla Knierim has joined from Fox Sports Midwest as a video producer and on-air-talent.

FanSided has also recently launched a variety of initiatives to expand the network, such as opening a new Chicago-based editorial headquarters with in-house video production studios.

The FanSided network experienced 80% average monthly year-over-year growth in unique monthly visitors for the first half of 2016, making it the fastest-growth rate in sports media among the top 15 digital sports networks, per the statement.

According to the June 2016 comScore report, the FanSided network’s monthly unique visitors grew to more than 10 million, up 105% from the previous year.
