Target CMO Jeff Jones Jets Over To Uber

Uber says it has hired Jeff Jones, Target’s top marketing exec, as its new president of ride sharing, in charge of operations, customer support and marketing.

In a post on its website called “Jeff, your Uber is arriving now,” Travis Kalanick, Uber’s controversial CEO and co-founder, says Jones will bring  “his unique brand of optimistic leadership to our people operations, helping to build uberEVERYTHING (EATS, RUSH, and others).”

He says Jones will help shape “the next phase at Uber, one in which we will build a global brand infused in every customer interaction.”

Jones has been at Target since 2012. In its announcement about Jones’ departure, CEO Brian Cornell thanked Jones for modernizing Target’s marketing strategy, adding that he  “evolved our marketing capabilities to center on the important role digital plays in their lives.” He also credited him for some marketing milestones. “Under his leadership, the team has also produced a number of unforgettable brand moments from the introduction of #MoreMusic during the industry’s biggest awards night to notable moments like our 2015 holiday campaign, which exceeded all previous brand measures.”

While Jones’ era at Target indeed included some big wins, it also comes at a time when the mass retailer’s comeback may be stalling: Earlier this month, the Minneapolis-based chain reported a fall in second-quarter sales, with results on a comparable-store basis dipping 1.1%. Management chalked the dip up to retail’s “difficult and challenging environment,” but Cornell also promised to “rebalance” its marketing messages, shoring up the value promise of its “Pay less” approach.

He says the company will look for Jones’ replacement in both an internal and external search.

It’s been a busy month for retail and apparel CMOs: Macy’s recently hired Richard A. Lennox, the CMO at Toys R Us, to replace Martine Reardon, who retired earlier this year. And Under Armour announced it hired Andy Donkin as its new CMO from Amazon, where he ran worldwide mass and band marketing.
