Oracle announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire DNS provider Dyn on Monday for an undisclosed price.

Dyn is a cloud-based Internet Performance and Domain Name System (DNS) solution that manages and optimizes cloud services and Internet applications to reduce load time and increase efficiency and satisfaction. The company optimizes the traffic of more than 3,500 customers, including Netflix, Reddit, Pfizer and CNBC. 

When the acquisition is finalized, Dyn will expand Oracle’s cloud computing capabilities by helping customers optimize Web site-driven revenue and manage risk.

Oracle already powers a marketplace of cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) capabilities, and Dyn will give the company an added layer of support for online services such as domain registration and traffic management.

Seventy percent of all organizations have an application in the cloud today, according to a recent report by IDG, and an additional 16% of organizations have plans to have an application running in the cloud within the next year. IDG predicts that, on average, organizations will invest $1.62 million in cloud computing this year.

Dyn had raised $88 million in two rounds of funding prior to its acquisition by Oracle. Until the acquisition is completed, Oracle and Dyn will continue to work as separate entities.

Dyn most recently made headlines this October when it was the victim of a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDOS) that disrupted traffic to many Web sites.
