Smithsonian, Gizmodo, Uproxx, Add New Sections, Verticals

Gizmodo Media Group, Smithsonian, Uproxx have enhanced their respective publications.

Smithsonian magazine has added a new section called "Prologue" in the June issue and online. The section focuses on innovation and technology in an overview of the future. It also addresses how history has impacted everything from talk shows to medicine.

For example, “Up in the Air” by Charles Fishman focuses on entrepreneurs experimenting with the idea of sending people to live, work and vacation in space. 

“Lucky Break” by Peter Andrey Smith examines how one girl’s accident led to the creation of the common medicine bacitracin. “Designing Tomorrow” by Justin Davidson features architect Bjarke Ingels, who built a new pyramid-shaped apartment complex in New York and is now mapping out a plan for the Smithsonian building in Washington, D.C.

Separately, Fusion Media Group has launched a new parenting vertical called Offspring, an effort by the editors of Lifehacker

Samsung is the launch partner.

Melissa Kirsch, editor-in-chief of Lifehacker, stated: “Offspring takes the DNA of Lifehacker—smart solutions, delightful hacks, ingenious upgrades—and customizes it for busy parents.”

Lifehacker is part of the Gizmodo Media Group, which includes includes Gizmodo, Deadspin, Jezebel, Kotaku, Jalopnik, The Root and Fusion. These sites along with The Onion, The A.V. Club and Clickhole make up the digital division of the Fusion Media Group. 

Offspring is the second new vertical Gizmodo Media Group has launched this year. The first was Compete, an e-sports site from the editors of Deadspin and Kotaku, with Gillette as the launch sponsor. 

To round up the week, Uproxx, an entertainment and pop culture site targeting millennial males, also added a new section dedicated to style. It will be curated by Zoo York cofounder Eli Morgan Gesner.

The style section's launch partner, 1800 Tequila, will promote the brand’s “Just Refined Enough” campaign with a three-part video series produced by Uproxx called "Refined from the Raw." 

In the series, designer Waraire Boswell will make a suit entirely from raw materials, which will be worn by an NBA player at the ESPY's Red Carpet event on July 12 and later auctioned off for charity.
