Roe Named Top 'Newsweek' Editor

Newsweek's executive editor Bob Roe, who has been serving as the interim global editor-in-chief, will now take on the role officially.

Roe had been filling in for Matt McAllester, who has been on a planned leave of absence since at least early August, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On August 9, the company said in a statement obtained by THR: "We can confirm that Matt McAllester has taken a planned leave of absence from Newsweek Media Group as his newly arrived family acclimates to life in the U.S.”

This all comes after McAllester was criticized in an employee discrimination lawsuit, filed against Time by Catherine Meyer, a former colleague at Time magazine and previously its Europe editor. She alleged that McAllester undermined her at the publication, though she repeatedly raised complaints.

McAllester was Europe editor for Time before he became the London-based international editor of Newsweek in the summer of 2015.

In February, McAllester was promoted to oversee the U.S. edition of the magazine, in addition to the international edition. He replaced U.S. editor Jim Impoco. McAllester took on the new title of global editor-in-chief and relocated to New York.

Roe has been with Newsweek for four years.

Newsweek Media Group was known as IBT Media until it rebranded earlier this year. Its properties include Newsweek, International Business Times, Design & Trend, Fashion Times, Player. One, Latin Times and Medical Daily.
