David Haskell will succeed Adam Moss as editor-in-chief of New York Media, overseeing New York magazine and its digital verticals. He will take on the role of editor-in-chief on April 1.

Moss announced he was stepping down yesterday after 15 years at the helm.

Moss told The New York Times that at 61, “I’m older than the staff. I’m older than the readers. I just want to do something new.”

Haskell is 39, and, like Moss, openly gay.

“When Adam told me he’d be stepping down, it was quickly apparent to me that David should be the person to succeed him, and I’m thrilled that he accepted the challenge,” stated New York Media CEO Pam Wasserstein.

“We have worked closely together, particularly in the last two years, when he has helped us to establish new business ventures that build on our legacy in exciting ways,” she added.

“I have known David his entire career, and I am confident New York Media's creative future across multiple arenas is in excellent hands," added Moss.

Haskell has worked at New York Media since 2007, when Moss invited him to guest-edit a special issue on London.

He has enjoyed a variety of roles since then, most recently as editor for business and strategy, a position he has held since 2016 to develop editorial growth projects.

Haskell has edited features, as well as led editorial strategy and partnerships for books, film, television, podcasts, events, ecommerce and verticals across New York magazine and its digital brands, which include Vulture, The Cut, Intelligencer, The Strategist and Grub Street.

Haskell has edited almost 300 features for New York magazine, as well as much of the magazine’s long-form political coverage.

“We are living through an extraordinary time in American life, one eerily well suited to New York’s strengths and obsessions. It’s now my job to make sure we cover it all with the intelligence and creativity our readers have come to expect,” Haskell stated.

Haskell is also the cofounder of Kings County Distillery and a ceramics artist.
