Cablevision Goes Wireless With Tivo

Cablevision Systems Corp. said it agreed to test market digital video recorders from TiVo that include wireless network capability.

The large New York-based cable operator said the test would give satellite customers--who sign up for a range of other services--a broadband link without the need for a telephone.

This effort might dovetail with TiVo's existing TiVoToGo service, which was launched some months ago, and enables customers to transfer programming to laptops and other portable video devices.

In other news, TiVo said its financial numbers have improved, as it climbed to break-even in the second quarter ending July, from a net loss a year ago. The company credits an increase in revenues from new subscribers, as well as savings in marketing.

TiVo reported a tiny net profit of $249,000, which amounts to zero cents share. This compared with a net loss of $10.8 million, or 13 cents a share a year earlier.
