World Surf League (WSL) is raising awareness for the upcoming Tahiti Pro Teahupo'o competition (presented by Hurley Championship Tour) by helping to protect French Polynesian coral reefs.
As part of its commitment to ocean conservation, WSL, under its non-profit arm PURE, is participating in the Glowing Glowing Gone campaign that highlights the global danger signaled by fluorescing corals.
WSL is introducing special jerseys in Pantone colors to represent the reefs that surfers will wear in the competition. The three colors, Glowing Yellow, Glowing Blue, and Glowing Purple, will be incorporated into all event branding.
The Glowing campaign is a joint initiative between The Ocean Agency and UN Environment and includes some of the world's largest conservation organizations. The campaign is further supported by Tahiti Pro partners Hurley, Jeep, Corona, and Red Bull. Several surfers are also participating in a project onsite in Tahiti with the Coral Gardeners to help restore coral reefs as part of leaving places better than before.
The Tahiti tournament is stop number seven out of 11 on the WSL Men’s Championship Tour. The event — running Wednesday, August 21 through Sunday, September 1, 2019 — is broadcast live on WorldSurfLeague.com and on the WSL app.
This coral reef advocacy is part of a broader sustainable commitment made by the league before the start of the season. In addition to leaving places better than before (including coral reefs), the WSL seeks to go carbon neutral and rid single use plastic at all WSL events.
