McClatchy’s daily newspapers will stop printing Saturday issues and move them to digital-only editions by the end of 2020, according to a company earnings call yesterday.

Last month, McClatchy announced Washington paper The News Tribune and The Olympian will cease publishing on Saturdays starting January 25, 2020.

In place of a Saturday edition, The News Tribune and The Olympian will produce Weekend Editions that include expanded coverage on Friday and Sunday, with comics, puzzles and TV listings.

The Fresno Bee and the Modesto Bee will stop printing Saturday editions starting January 11. 

McClatchy owns more than 30 publications in 14 states.

On Wednesday, the company announced circulation revenue in the third quarter had exceeded ad revenue for the first time in its 162-year history.

Digital-only subscriptions grew nearly 50% from the same quarter last year.

However, McClatchy reported a net loss of $304.7 million in the third quarter. Ad revenues declined 19%.

Separately, Sports Illustrated will become a monthly magazine, Yahoo Finance reported this week. Sports Illustrated will also produce four special issues and the Swimsuit Issue, totaling 17 issues in 2020.

The magazine shifted from a weekly to a twice monthly publishing schedule in January 2018.

Sports Illustrated will upgrade its paper stock and increase the price of its issues on newsstands.

The Maven, a publicly traded firm focused on digital publishing, bought the rights to operate Sports Illustrated from Authentic Brands Group in June. ABG purchased the sports magazine from Meredith Corp. for $110 million in May.
