G/O Media Promotes Jim Rich To Editorial Director, 'Jalopnik' Gets New EIC

G/O Media has a new editorial director, Jim Rich. He succeeds Paul Maidment, who resigned last November.

Rich was chosen to take the role after an “extensive” external and internal search, according to the company.

Rich was most recently editor in chief of sports news and opinion site Deadspin. He was tapped in January to relaunch the site, after the entire staff resigned last fall, following months of clashes between editorial and management.

In his new role, Rich will oversee the news desks of G/O Media's 11 brands, as well as investigative journalism practices, content creation and original reporting, including video.

The company’s other brands include: Gizmodo, The A.V. Club, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Lifehacker, The Takeout, The Root, The Inventory and The Onion.

Rich has also previously served as editor in chief of the New York Daily News.

The new Deadspin was unveiled in March. Deputy editor Eric Barrow will become top editor of the site.

In addition, G/O Media named Rory Carroll editor in chief of its automotive news and opinion site Jalopnik. Carroll was most recently executive editor and publisher at Autoweek, where he oversaw a rebranding that resulted in 20% audience growth. His new role is effective May 4.

Carroll also served as a contributor to The New York Times’ "Wheels" blog.

“The site is an extremely important, vital part of car culture, and I look forward to growing the brand and this community of enthusiasts,” he stated.
