'Jezebel' Relaunches History Vertical 'The Attic'

Jezebel is relaunching the history vertical Pictorial, with a new name and broader scope.

Called "The Attic," the vertical will also include Jezebel's books coverage and other cultural criticism, according to senior editor Kelly Faircloth, who introduced the new vertical to readers in a post on the site.

"We love delving into nerdy historical and critical pursuits, and as that type of coverage overall has shrunk across the internet in recent years, we thought it was the perfect time to expand and further indulge some of our most obsessive bookworm impulses,” Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, editor in chief of Jezebel, told Publishers Daily.

The Attic will cover education, history, writers and books, essays and cultural critiques, among other topics.

Areas of interest range from literary culture to royals and fashion and forgotten history.

The Attic isn’t outside the news cycle, so much as it provides context on current events and offers you a higher vantage point to see whatever is happening on the ground,” Faircloth wrote.

Pictorial launched in 2015.

Recent stories on The Attic include the skincare routine of Marilyn Monroe, images of 1957 patio furniture and a tribute to Roy Horn, half of the animal and magic entertaining duo Siegfried & Roy, who passed away last week.

The team at Jezebel chose to call the vertical The Attic “because it’s such a rich and relevant image,” Faircloth wrote. “It’s creaky and creepy and atmospheric and yet cozy at the same time. It’s a spot to hide and read on a rainy day. It’s a place to rummage for what’s been forgotten and what’s been deliberately hidden, whether out of protectiveness or malice. It’s a cache of secrets and backstories and weird, broken treasures.”

Jezebel’s other verticals include The Muse, The Slot, Barf Bag and Dirt Bag.
