'Bon Appetit' Names Sonia Chopra As Executive Editor

Former head of Vox Media’s Eater, Sonia Chopra, is heading to Bon Appétitto become executive editor. She will take on the new role August 24.

Chopra will help lead editorial content across Bon Appétit, Epicurious, Healthyish and Basically. She will also be responsible for liaising with Condé Nast Entertainment and help develop video strategy. 

"I've been a loyal fan of the brand for years and look forward to collaborating with them to create meaningful change at this pivotal moment happening in food media,” Chopra stated.

Chopra has worked at Eater for over six years, also serving as a co-executive producer on Eater's PBS show “No Passport Required” and as Eater's managing editor.

Bon Appétit is still searching for an editor in chief, after previous editor Adam Rapoport resigned in June, following allegations of racial discrimination.

Some staff have since demanded equal pay for the people of color appearing on popular "Test Kitchen" videos.

Three of Bon Appétit’s "Test Kitchen" stars (Priya Krishna, a contributing writer, Rick Martinez, a contributing food editor, and Sohla El-Waylly, an assistant food editor) announced today on social media they will no longer appear in the videos, after pay negotiations with Condé Nast failed to meet their expectations.

Last week, Condé Nast Entertainment announced its president, Oren Katzeff, was stepping down, after allegations of racial pay disparities. He will be replaced by Agnes Chu, former head of content for Disney+, in September.

Bon Appétit has not posted new videos to its popular YouTube channel since June 5.

Until the next top editor is announced, Chopra will report to Anna Wintour, U.S. artistic director and editor in chief of Vogue.

Bon Appétit has more than 6 million YouTube subscribers, 7 million print readers and 10.6 million digital unique visitors, according to the company.
