A Hot Mess, Inside A Dumpster Fire, Inside A Train Wreck

If you tuned in to the “debate” on Tuesday night, you probably agree with CNN’s Jake Tapper, who said, “That was a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck…It wasn’t even a debate. It was a disgrace.”

My views on That Moron in the White House are well known by readers of this column. But I think to any objective observer, he did an outstanding job of taunting, lying and name-calling his way to proving why no reasonable person should enable four more years of his criminality, stupidity and narcissism.

Biden certainly did not light the world on fire with his performance, but just as folks voted “against Hillary” in 2016, I expect many will vote for him just to get That Moron out of office.

I know a good deal of thought went into how to stage the debate, and the ground rules were repeated often (although you know who ignored nearly all the reprimands). But it got me thinking that there has to be a better way to hold a debate that necessarily includes That Moron.

Here are some ideas:

Cut off his mic. Whenever he interrupts or speaks out of turn, cut off his mic. Nearly everything he said was a lie, but it reinforces his base when he shouts out unprovable claims.

Fact-check in real time. While the speed and unpredictability of the proceedings make real-time fact-checking difficult, I think viewers would still appreciate a screen scroll even minutes later correcting the generally false claims he makes.

Get tougher. Even though Chris Wallace tried to calm the proceedings, he is being widely criticized for not better maintaining some sense of order. Perhaps his “tough” interview with That Moron a few weeks was supposed to offset the fact that he is a Fox News employee -- but on its own terms, Fox has proven to be nothing more than an extension of  That Moron’s campaign.

I would not have moved on until That Moron repudiated white supremacists. As Adlai Stevenson said to the Soviet ambassador during the Cuban Missile Crisis, “I am prepared to wait for my answer until hell freezes over.”

Facts-and-figures homework. Wallace knew in advance what the questions would be. It would not have been hard to predict That Moron’s answers and have ready accurate facts and figures to push back. It should not have been Biden’s job to call bullshit all night.

More than anything else, the debate made us all ashamed to be Americans. The world has wondered for four years what in the hell we were thinking putting That Moron in office in the first place.  Now that there's even a small chance he could be reelected sends a signal that what had been the strongest nation on earth since WWII is now its laughingstock.

But you decide on election day: a fresh new start with adult supervision -- or four more years of embarrassment?

Breaking News: That Moron Has Covid. "It is what it is."

Trump is a mess and Biden and the left are a disaster. If I'm going with personality and demeaner, I would choose Trump, we need someone who is completely insensitive in order to say things like they are. If I'm going for policies, I would choose Trump, we need pragmatism over symbolism, we need clear agendas and less government control. If I’m choosing safety, freedom and prosperity and less toxic rhetoric I'm choosing Trump, we do not need victimhood, classism and grievance pushed on America 24/7/365. If I’m choosing law and order like when prosecutors, courts, laws and juries decide whose guilty instead of mobs, looters and vandalizers then I’m choosing Trump. If however I want the same government industrial complex and backdoor deals that have been the cornerstone of American politics for around 47 years or if I need to be comforted by hearing words like respect, love and kindness even though government is incapable of respecting, loving or being kind nor are they capable of forcing anyone to be loving, respectful or kind then I guess I would throw all logic out the window and pray that somehow all the fundamental laws of business, human nature, crime, money and government bureaucracy can magically vanish and that whose never accomplished anything can wave a magic wand ….well in that case I’d choose Joe Biden. I don't like trump one bit and that’s why he's the right bulldozer for the job.

Maria: a lucid and well reasoned response. But how can you respect a man who has lied to you 20,000 times (so far). Character  has to count or we are all going to hell in a hand basket. Is the nation/the world better off than 4 years ago?

Seems like the Kool aid can be mixed in all kinds of drinks. All of their policies towards indentured servitude and slavery through poverty is a big draw, especially with whether or not surpressed 1850 rascists. PS: Every city/town, etc. is socialist. We put in tax money and they take out for what is needed like police, fire, streets and tree pruning and a myriad of other services provided. Otherwise, only people who could afford a police service would have to be paid for each service they provide to those who need it. Same with 911 medical calls. If we don't start reteaching civics - just the mechanics - again, this is what we get - a totalitarian sociopath and lemmings "right here in River City".

You make a great observation Paula.

The current US lingua franca of 'socialist' is so wide a net that its misuse basically includes any and every form of government - from the Federal to the State to the Local level (which is clearly a non sequitir).

In our little village we have a 'Community Association' to organise garden displays, local markets, film nights, plays etc.   Yep - looks like we've all become socialists because we help each other.

A wise friend of mine (observing from afar) recently described the current happenings in the US as 'witnessing the descent from democracy to demagoguery'.
