Vox Media Acquires 'Punch,' Site Devoted To The Cocktail Culture

Vox Media has acquired Punch, a media brand devoted to what it calls drinks and cocktail culture. Terms were not disclosed.

Talia Baiocci, editor-in-chief of Punch, will join Vox Media. Baiocci will hold the same title and report to Amanda Kludt, editor-in-chief of Eater and senior vice president at Vox Media. Punch, a James Beard award winner, will be a sister brand to Eater

Punch was founded in 2013 by Baiocchi and Aaron Wehner, EVP and publisher of Crown/Random House Publishing, as an independent digital vertical within Penguin Random House. They aimed to prove that “drinks possess the same humanity, cultural capital and potential for storytelling as food,” Baiocci writes in a post.

Since then, Punch has published 10 books, including The Essential Cocktail Book, Easy Tiki, Spritz, The Mini Bar and a trivia game Another Round.

"I've long admired — and often envied — the work Talia and her talented team produce at Punch," says Kludt. "They bring an authority but also a sense of fun and creative energy to their coverage of drinks trends, figures, and culture, and they do it with style.

This is the fifth recent M&A announcement from Vox. In April, it acquired Cafe Studios, the podcast-first media company known for Preet Bharara’s podcast, Stay Tuned with Preet

Baiocci writes in a post: “Today, Punch proudly joins the Vox Media family, alongside EaterVoxSB Nationthe VergePolygonNew York magazine and its digital brands and more.”

But the lead story today is about drink: “A Rosé so Divine They Call it Baby Jesus.”
