NPR is laying off around 10% of its workforce, at least 100 people, the public radio network announced on Wednesday.   

It will also eliminate most vacant positions, according to a story on the NPR website. 

NPR is facing a loss of advertising dollars, especially for its podcasts. Its total revenues will probably fall $30 million or even $32 million short of expectations.

Decisions on which jobs will be cut are expected to be in place by the week of March 20.  The network says it will seek to avoid a disproportionate impact on people of color. 

“Our financial outlook has darkened considerably over recent weeks,” CEO John Lansing wrote in a memo to staff.  

Lansing also wrote,, "When we say we are eliminating filled positions, we are talking about our colleagues - people whose skills, spirit and talents help make NPR what it is today, This will be a major loss.
