NPR Cancels Podcasts Amid Layoffs, Budget Gap

NPR, hampered by a $30 million budget gap and a 10% staff reduction, has halted production on three podcasts: "Invisibilia," "Louder Than a Riot" and "Rough Translation."

In addition, the radio network has canceled "Everyone & Their Mom," a comedy podcast spun off last year from the radio program "Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me."

Podcasts have experienced the steepest revenue decline, The Washington Post reports.

The layoffs affected staffers in various positions, from correspondents to those who work in production and research.

"We literally are fighting to secure the future of NPR at this very moment by restructuring our cost structure,” John Lansing, chief executive of NPR, said in an NPR interview.

Lansing added, "It's existential."
