Our Sunday Visitor (OSV). a Catholic publication based in Indiana, has run into a problem that could affect publishers of all types: sensitive data on subscribers was recently exposed in a. cyber attack. 

On March 8, the publication noticed suspicious activity on its network, and promptly launched a probe. In addition, it contacted law enforcement and put additional safeguards in place. 

“The investigation determined that certain files were acquired by an unknown actor while on OSV’s network,” the publication revealed on its website.

While the data varies for each person, the scope of information includes the “name, address, Social Security number, date of birth, driver’s license or state ID number, tax ID number, financial account information, treatment cost information, diagnosis/condition, treatment information, claims information, and health plan enrollment number,” the site reports. 

OSV plans to mail notifications to affected individuals.

Meanwhile, it has posted instructions on how individuals can protect themselves, advising them to monitor their credit reports and account statements. 

The publication states “The confidentiality, privacy, and security of information in our care is among our highest priorities.”
