The decline of print has been further illustrated by last Friday’s closure of the Prinovis plant in Liverpool, leaving Walstead, as the only printer in the UK able
to handle major magazines.
“In recent months, companies including Rupert Murdoch’s News UK and the German magazine giant Bauer have moved to strike
new printing deals – for titles including Heat and Grazia, all the weekly newspaper supplements and magazines for the Times, Sunday Times and Sun on Sunday – ahead of the closure of
Liverpool-based Prinovis on Friday,: The Guardian writes.
Prinovis is owned by the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann. Last November, citing a decline in the print
publishing market and “reduced order volumes in both the commercial and periodical markets. the company announced it would close the Liverpool facility.
“Bertelsmann has
supported Prinovis UK through a challenging period in order to determine whether a market recovery would occur post pandemic and to allow sufficient time to review business options to identify whether
a profitable position could be regaine,” Bertelsmann wrote. “Unfortunately, macro-economic events have continued to increase pressure and there continues to be insufficient volume to
enable the business to realistically return to profitability.”
