Mother Jones has named Jamilah King as its editorial director, marking King’s return to the nonprofit news outlet after a stint as managing editor and deputy inequality editor at BuzzFeed. The appointment is effective October 16.
King had previously worked at Mother Jones for over four years in various
roles.
For example, King hosted 180+ episodes of The Mother Jones Podcast, served as the race and justice reporter and wrote respected
profiles of Black female officeholders and candidates, including Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams, Lucy McBath and Carroll Fife.

King hopes to deepen the nonprofit news outlet’s investigative journalism, and will especially
focus on LGBTQ issues, racial justice and wealth inequality.
At BuzzFeed, King integrated business and editorial operations and spearheaded a revenue-generating direct
sales program. She also supervised a team of reporters in various cities, including London, Delhi, Mexico City and New York City.
King was also the host of HBO’s
The Last Call Podcast, tied to a documentary series about gay men in New York being murdered in the early 1990s.
““I’m thrilled to
have the phenomenally talented Jamilah King back on the team,” says Clara Jeffery, editor-in-chief of Mother Jones.
Jones has
“a great ability to identify the underreported stories of our day and help reporters do the kind of careful excavation to bring them to light,” Jeffrey adds.
In addition, “her experience working in a variety of media dovetails with our multi-platform strategy,” Jeffrey continues.
