The Athletic To Reduce Local Sports Podcasts: Report

Sports fans should no longer look to The Athletic for podcasts on local teams.

The news site which now provides all New York Times sports coverage, is cutting back on local podcasts, NiemanLab reports.

James Edward III, the beat writer who covers the Detroit Pistons, admitted as much in the last episode of the "Bun and Cardigan Show," NiemanLab continues.

“The Athletic is not doing local podcasts anymore," Edward said. “Don’t worry — I’m still covering the Pistons for The Athletic. This is just an audio thing.”

The Times announced in July that it would disband its sports department and rely on coverage of teams and games from The Athletic, with no layoffs planned.

“We plan to focus even more directly on distinctive, high-impact news and enterprise journalism about how sports intersect with money, power, culture, politics and society at large,” the editors wrote in an email to the Times’s newsroom.

The Times acquired The Athletic in January 2022 for $550 million.
