The Daily Iowan, a student newspaper at the University of Iowa, has acquired two community papers, the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist, from Woodward Communications, effective with their Feb. 8 editions, the Iowan announced. 

The terms were not disclosed. 

The Daily Iowan is part of the non-profit corporation Student Publications, Inc.

The University of Iowa’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication will operate the Mount Vernon and Solon newspapers in an effort to provide students with local reporting experience. 

However, their local editors will continue to lead editorial direction of the papers.

“We are excited for this opportunity and it’s a great fit for our organization,” says Jason Brummond, DI Publisher, who will manage and serve as publisher of the two publications. “Community newspapers play an important and integral role in their communities, and we believe strongly in quality local journalism.”
