Chipotle is celebrating the extra calendar day for 2024’s Leap Year on Feb. 29 with an “Extra Day, Extra Codes” gamified scavenger hunt.

Twenty-nine customers will receive free guacamole for one year by winning the Instagram-only promotion, which runs from Feb. 26 through Feb. 29. Players will have to uncover 29 keywords hidden in the chain’s Instagram content and captions @Chipotle. Ten keywords will be available daily on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27, and nine keywords will be available on February 28, beginning at 9 A.M. PST each day.

Then for each keyword, the 366th player to text the keyword to 888222 will win free guacamole for a year (as 366 represents the number of days in a Leap Year).

“There’s no better way to celebrate an additional day on the calendar than with our iconic guacamole not being [an] extra [charge],” said Stephanie Perdue, vice president of brand marketing, in a press release.

Chipotle Rewards members who don’t play the scavenger hunt can still receive free guac on Feb. 29. Digital orders placed exclusively on the Chipotle app and Chipotle.com must use the code EXTRA24 to get the freebie.

To say Chipotle goes through a lot of guac is an understatement. For 2024, across the U.S., Canada and Europe, the company is expected to use approximately 5.18 million cases of avocados, equivalent to 129.5 million pounds of green fruit. Chipotle guac is made fresh with six ingredients: avocados, cilantro, red onion, jalapeno, citrus juice and kosher salt.
