Entire Deadspin Staff Laid Off As Sports Blog Is Sold

Deadspin, a UK-based sports blog, was acquired by European startup Lineup Publishing, now former owner G/O Media informed the staff on Monday. All writers and editors were sacked on the spot.

The newsroom staffers were given 30 minutes notice before being locked out of their company laptops, The Daily Mail reports.

“Deadspin’s new owners have made the decision to not carry over any of the site’s existing staff and instead build a new team more in line with their editorial vision for the brand,” Jim Spanfeller, CEO of G/O Media said in a memo to the staff, according to The Daily Mail

The number of affected workers was not reported, but it includes employees in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The difference between this and the recent staff-wide layoff at Vice is that this product apparently will survive.

G/O Media saw “a sizable premium from our original purchase price for the site,” Spanfeller wrote.
