Outback Steakhouse Presents Girl Interrupted: No Steak!

Outback Steakhouse is out with a new limited-time-offer ad campaign with an unusual twist.

It features a family on a staycation with a daughter who has her heart set on steak.

But a not-so-tiny problem develops when the daughter finds out that no steak has been factored into the stay-at-home family fun.

The ad, from Mischief @ No Fixed Address, starts with a promotion (running through Feb. 2) for a “Steak-Cation” meal starting at $14.99.

“It’s better than a staycation at home,” the narrator states as the scene promptly shifts to a family (mom, dad, son & teenage daughter) playing a board game in their living room.

And before you can say “medium rare, please,” the daughter erupts, tossing the board game into the air and exclaiming, “I thought this was steak-cation not a staycation!” before storming upstairs to her room, screaming “steak!” as if she was having withdrawal symptoms from the lack of ingesting beef.

Concerned Dad follows her upstairs and gently knocks on the door. “Go away, I wish you were a steak,” the girl screams.

“Me too,” the dad responds, before the spot concludes with a reminder of the Steak-Cation promotion running through the month.

“There are restaurant LTO ads, then there's this,” says Leah Burgess, senior director, strategic growth marketing, at Outback parent Bloomin’ Brands. “A weird emotional roller coaster you didn't expect to take... It captures Outback's don't-take-yourself-too-seriously personality perfectly and cuts through the LTO sea of sameness.”
