Some months ago, Gmail unveiled a feature called Help me write in Gmail. The communication was clear enough to say that the tool was designed for that purpose.
But now
there are a couple of additional functions that can assist users to write in their natural voice. A blog post this week lists them as follows:
- Topic
contextualization: The feature can connect to Google Drive and Gmail based on the user’s prompt. It will then use the context from these apps to automatically insert relevant information
into the email draft, reducing the time spent toggling between apps to find specific details.
- Tone and style personalization: The Help me write tool can now create
personalized email drafts that match the tone and tyle of your previously written emails.
Please forgive a note of skepticism. This reporter would rather make
his own mistakes and have the copy desk tone up his writing, adhering to the AP Stylebook--he doesn't like the idea of Gmail determining his "voice." And, hopefully, he is capable of writing his own
emails to say he will be home at 6 p.m.
