Pentagon Fires Publisher, Editor Of 'Stars And Stripes'

Stars and Stripes was rocked on Friday when the Pentagon fired the publisher, Max Lederer, and the editor in chief, Erik Slavin. Lederer had announced his retirement last week, The Associated Press reports. Also dismissed was Lara Korte, Middle East reporter for the publication. Slavin said he was fired for insubordination after he objected to potential censorship during an interview with CBS. “I stand by the principle that Stars and Stripes must remain editorially independent, as required by law and by the department’s own policies,” Slavin said.
