Broadband's Global Reach

  • by December 29, 2006

Internet Broadcast Corp., a one-stop shop for global news, is making the most of broadband video. The Montreal-based startup that racks up more than 4 million hits a month at ibctoday.com has content-sharing agreements with leading news organizations such as Fox News, the BBC, and the Associated Press, offering viewers access to both national and international content.

IBC's audience is diverse, ranging from people from sub-Saharan Africa living in New York City to Londoners living in Los Angeles. "We aim to provide the news from home and the top breaking news stories," says Tyler Cavell, IBC's president and founder. Broadcasts from the leading news organizations in Turkey and Armenia can be found on the IBC network along with English transcripts. So far, IBC has scored more than 20 broadcast agreements around the world.

"We look to countries that have a lot of news power. Obviously, the U.S. is very important for us," Cavell says, noting that IBC adds about three news organizations per month. The licensing agreements give IBC exclusive broadcast rights to the top news stories 24 hours a day.

IBC also has a patent-pending proprietary ad tool that enables advertisers to precisely target people. News clips are viewed on a PC and are also available via mobile devices.

IBC's power, Cavell says, is its ability "to extend your brand so that not only can Fox News be viewed in America, but in 95 countries. If you're an IKEA, a truly global brand, we can help you target your customer in Africa."
