Kraft Foods, which markets Capri Sun, is taking the words "All Natural" off its packaging, a move the food giant said was in the works well before the Center for Science in the Public Interest
threatened to sue it if it did not. The reformulated Capri Sun will go into production in two weeks, a company spokesperson said.
"The new packaging ... will say that Capri Sun contains
'no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.' ... With this action, the phrase 'All Natural' is being removed from the package," the company's statement said.
The new Capri Sun, which also will
contain vitamins C and E, still will be made with high-fructose corn syrup, but Kraft already makes a 100 percent fruit juice version of the brand.
CPSI had charged that since the drinks contain
small amounts of juice and water and are sweetened artificially with high fructose corn syrup, there is nothing natural about them.
In May, the center told soda giant Cadbury Schweppes that it
would sue the company for rebranding 7Up as "100% Natural," despite the fact that it includes corn syrup. CSPI said it is in discussions with Cadbury, but is considering a suit if Cadbury doesn't
agree to changes soon. -- Nina M. Lentini
