Cadbury Schweppes has decided to drop the "all natural" claim from its 7Up soda labeling after the Center for Science in the Public Interest threatened to sue for deceptive advertising. The
controversy involves high fructose corn syrup, which some groups say is not a natural ingredient since its chemical bonds are broken and rearranged in the manufacturing process.
Cadbury's
action follows a similar one taken recently by Kraft, which announced it is repackaging Capri Sun to replace the "all natural" term. Unlike the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which defines "natural"
for meat and poultry products, the Food and Drug Administration policy says only that food can be considered natural if "nothing artificial or synthetic" has been added.
