To Play or not Play

I recently purchased the Playstation 3. $600 - not sure who the target market was with a price like that. But it was worth it. I initially bought it for the BluRay alone, I thought I was past the point in my life where video games were important (especially if I have to pay $600 just to get the system), but after playing Call of Duty 3, I was wrong.

The system has a lot of features that I feel were lacking in the XBOX 360 when it was released –the ability to play HD movies without having to purchase extra crap, wireless internet, and free online gaming. I’ll say it again - free online gaming. It also is the cheapest BluRay Player that I have seen and still supports surround sound.

Weaknesses… No HDMI cable. This is “the cable” that allows the person who paid $600 for the system to watch BluRay movies or play games in High Definition. This forces that person to take another trip out and go to BestBuy to spend another $100 on the cable to make the thing work. What is that? The system also weighs about twenty pounds and takes up more space than any other piece of entertainment equipment I have ever seen.

So… $600 may be a little crazy to be paying for a gaming system. But, it isn’t a just gaming system, it’s a home entertainment system, it replaced my entire set of equipment (with all the incompatible remotes) in one swoop and that goes a long way. Also, it’s reassuring to know that if I do buy a game, I can play online forever without having to pay for anything.

Could I have lived without it, definitely. Can I live without it now? Never.
