Will Video Save the Radio Star?

Here's a techno tongue twister: Sirius Satellite Radio Video. First hyped by the company back in 2004, Sirius Satellite Radio is finalizing the content of its new video service, now scheduled to debut in late 2007. Speaking at a Reuters Media Summit in December, Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin said he expects his company to offer several channels of mobile video, primarily geared toward passengers in the rear seat - kids. (A Sirius spokes-person confirms the strategy, but declines to comment further.) Wall Street and Madison Avenue remain receptive to the concept. Thomas Eagan, an analyst for Oppenheimer & Co., upgraded the stock based on the move - as did other investors. And marketers have given the idea a nod of approval. "Video is the Trojan horse for satellite radio," says Corey Weiss, vice president for integrated marketing for Palisades MediaGroup. "It's a cheap way for a consumer to get content in the car anywhere. And besides, what else can satellite radio do to grow? Subscribers are flat."
