'Cane' Doesn't Sweeten Audience, 'House' Does

Little sugar buzz was gained from CBS' Tuesday night debut of "Cane," a drama about a family running a rum and sugar business.

Grabbing a weak Nielsen preliminary 2.9 rating among 18-49 viewers--less than last year's 3.5 rating for the debut of "Smith" in the same period--"Cane" could only muster a distant second-place to NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims," which grabbed healthy 4.6 rating/10 share.

Dominating the evening was the growing king of Tuesday night--Fox's "House," which climbed 7% to a 7.7 rating among 18-49 viewers.

That put Fox in the driver's seat--easily winning the night with a 5.4 rating. Well behind was NBC, and ABC tied at a 3.6 rating/10. CBS ended with a 2.9/8.

At 8 p.m., ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" again took home top honors with a 4.6, well ahead of Fox's 3.2 for "Bones" and CBS' 3.1 for "NCIS."

But at 9 p.m., the last half-hour of the 90-minute "Stars" drifted down to a 3.8 rating--thanks to the dominating "House" with its 7.7. ABC also suffered a bit, starting "Boston Legal" at 9:30 p.m. The show couldn't get any traction in the 10 p.m. half-hour, only earning a 2.5.

CW also started its Tuesday fall programming campaign with a performance of its critically acclaimed "Reaper." The show was up by 6% in adults 18-34 to a 1.8, versus its "Beauty and The Geek" 8 p.m. lead-in. The show was also up against its young-skewing "Veronica Mars," which ran in the same time period a year ago.

For the night among 18-49 viewers, CW finished just ahead of Univision with a 1.5 rating/4 share versus Univision's 1.3/3. Univision's best came at 9 p.m. with a 2.0 for "Destilando Amor."
