Top Search Terms (And Trends) For October

Enid Burns has posted charts of the top 10 search terms for 10 categories according to Hitwise, and an analysis of the data reveals what brands, Web properties and activities snagged the most user interest in October.

Some of the results were surprising -- for example, in the Broadcast Media category, searches for any variation of NBC's "Hulu" didn't crack the top 10 - despite all the industry and blog buzz about the launch of NBC and Fox's joint online video venture. CNN was the clear leader, with "CNN," "cnn.com" and "CNN news" taking the first, third, and seventh spots. "Fox news" took second place, while the "BBC" was also of high interest, snagging the sixth and eighth spots.

"Pizza hut" was the first most-searched-for term in the food and beverage brand category, likely a result of a multichannel ad campaign touting that users could now order their pizzas online. "McDonald's" came in second place, while "Starbucks" was the third most searched for term.

"Paypal" and its variations "paypal.com," "www.paypal.com" and "pay pal" took a total of four spots in the top 10 when it came to the IT and Internet searches category, including first and second place.

Meanwhile, despite the fact that Facebook has usurped News Corp.'s MySpace in terms of industry buzz, variations of the term "myspace" took four spots in the top 10 (including first and second place) when it came to net communities and chat -- while "Facebook" took only sixth place.
