GPS-Based Social Networking On Mobile Phone

The future of social networking may be on your cell phone. We'll use our mobile devices to help us remember details of people we know, but not well. And it will help us meet new people for dating, business and friendship. Imagine walking into a meeting, classroom, party, bar, subway station, airplane, etc. and seeing profile information about other people in the area, depending on privacy settings. Picture, name, dating status, resume information, etc.

Of course, this future requires that social networks know an awful lot about you and everyone you know and don't know. Not just who you are, but also where you are, and what kind of information your interested in at the time (business profile, dating profile, friendship profile, etc). Says Tech Crunch: "Poking someone on Facebook is great, but "poking" them when you're in the same bar as them can result in much more immediate social gratification."

It's certainly a logical progression for social networks, but are consumers comfortable with the idea of making their personal information available with GPS tracking? Perhaps, but it's one thing to offer personal information from the relative safety of your living room. It's another to do so in front of hundreds of strangers.
