Fandango announced that it sold about 16% of all tickets to New Line Cinemas' "Sex and the City" over the weekend. The film, a continuation of the HBO Original Series, beat most analyst projections by
surpassing the $55 million mark in domestic box office sales.
According to Rick Butler, Fandango's Chief Operating Officer, "Sex and the City" represented a landmark film for the
online movie community and ticketing service. Fandango users bought more than one million advance tickets to the film--breaking the 1,000 mark in terms of advance sold-out shows. Meanwhile, "Sex and
the City" was also one of the company's fastest ticket-sellers, as nearly 10 tickets were sold per second during extended peak hours.
"Internet ticket sales for 'Sex and the City' have been
nothing short of extraordinary for a female-driven picture," Butler said.
