Even pizza is proving to a bit of extravagance for Americans, and Domino's says its same-store sales fell 5.4% in the U.S. in the second quarter.

"Returning to positive sales comps in the U.S. has proven difficult, as the external environment continues to make it tough to regain lost sales momentum," the company says, adding that it is optimistic about its growth initiatives.

"We continue to achieve excellent results in our international division, along with strong store growth in all regions of the world." The Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company says net income increased to $18.7 million, compared to $2.3 million in the same quarter last year, primarily because of expenses incurred last year.--Sarah Mahoney
