U.S. Gets First Intellectual Property Czar

President Bush signed into law a measure creating an intellectual property czar.

As enacted, the bill, the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act, does not include a controversial provision that would have allowed the Department of Justice to bring civil suits to enforce copyright laws. Although included in initial versions of the measure, it was removed two weeks ago, after Bush administration officials objected to the proposal.--Wendy Davis
