Vivian Schiller, the general manager of NYTimes.com, is leaving to become CEO of NPR (National Public Radio), paidContent reports. Schiller has overseen the expansion of the
Times site in
recent years including the addition of blogs, reader comments and outside links.
According to internal memos posted to both paidContent.com and Gawker.com, Schiller will leave the
Times as of Dec. 1 and start at NPR on Jan. 5. Shiller's hiring appears to fit with NPR's plans to push aggressively into digital media to broaden its audience. Last month, it launched its own
social network, NPR Community.
She will replace Dennis Haarsager, who served as interim CEO of NPR following the departure of Ken Stern, who was forced out in March by NPR's board after only a
year and a half as chief executive.--Mark Walsh
