Doctors: Jobs' Email 'Vague, Contradictory'

  • Wired, Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:30 PM
Wired says that Steve Jobs latest health statement, in which he described his dramatic weight loss as having stemmed from a hormonal imbalance, "is contradictory and makes little sense" according to medical experts contacted by the tech news site. Robert Lustig, a prominent neuroendocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco says there are three medical threads running through the statement, and they "don't add up to a very strong cable."

In an open letter, published Monday, Jobs wrote: "Doctors think they have found the cause -- a hormone imbalance that has been 'robbing' me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis. The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I've already started treatment."

Reactions to the letter have varied from "knee-jerk skepticism" to "thoughtful analyses" of his current condition, but "common to all, however, is a paucity of meaningful detail," says Wired. As Lustig says, "(Jobs') email is specifically vague, and I'm sure it's meant to be. He doesn't want us to know what's going on."
