  • KELLY O'DEA, President of Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide, is leaving the agency to take a position within its parent, Interpublic Group. The position is believed to be at IPG's Advanced Marketing Services group, which provides strategic advice, consulting services and specialized services for IPG clients. The unit is led by CEO Larry Weber. O'Dea joined FCB as President, Worldwide in 2000 from Bozell, where he had been Vice Chairman, International Operations and Global Client Development. Before that, he had spent his entire career at Ogilvy & Mather, including a role as President, Worldwide Client Service.

  • Avenue A, Inc., a digital marketing services and technology company, announced that it has launched a new corporate advisory board. GRAHAM PHILLIPS, former CEO of Ogilvy & Mather and ERVIN SHAMES, former CEO of General Foods USA will join Brian McAndrews and Dr. Jack Sansolo, Eddie Bauer's former Executive Vice President of Global Brand Direction on the advisory board. Phillips has almost 30 years of media experience. Shames has decades of consumer manufacturing experience, and now serves as a visiting lecturer at University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business, teaching second-year courses in Consumer Marketing and Advertising.

  • Modem Media, an interactive marketing firm, this week announced the addition of 3 new leadership positions in its San Francisco office. DAN SPRINGER has been appointed as Managing Director, KAMAL NABIJEE as Vice President of Technology, and MELISSA EISENBERG as Vice President of Marketing Strategy and Services. Springer joined Modem Media from Telleo, a Silicon Valley firm providing targeted direct marketing services, where he served as Chief Executive Officer. Nabijee joins Modem Media from Organic, Inc. His background includes technology leadership roles in iXL's Digital Media and Broadband Solutions Group, and as a Principal with Lante. Eisenberg came to Modem Media from The Peppers and Rogers Group, where she served as a Partner, leading the firm's channel management and technology industry practices.

  • One day after claiming victory in the end-of-season ratings race, NBC on Wednesday reshuffled its executive ranks, expanding the role of its programming chief, JEFF ZUCKER, and reassigning West Coast President SCOTT SASSA. Zucker, who was executive producer of NBC's "Today" show before being named NBC entertainment president 18 months ago, will assume the responsibilities previously handled by Sassa, including the company's production house, NBC Studios, and its licensing and syndication arm, NBC Enterprises. Sassa will remain with NBC, a unit of General Electric Co., "working on strategic projects" and exploring "ways to extend the corporate brand." He will report to NBC Chairman and CEO Bob Wright and Andrew Lack, the network's president and chief operating officer.

  • AltaVista® Company, a global provider of search services and software and a majority-owned operating company of CMGI, Inc., has appointed FRED BULLOCK to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for its Internet division. Bullock will lead planning and execution of customer-focused marketing, product and branding strategies for AltaVista's Internet search business. Bullock brings 25 years of worldwide corporate, product and technology marketing experience to AltaVista, including 14 years with Apple Computer, Inc. At Apple he led international product marketing, market development and marketing programs teams that introduced revolutionary products and built new markets. He also managed marketing operations in international markets including Europe, Australia, Japan and India.

  • The Interactive Marketing unit of AOL TIME WARNER'S AMERICA ONLINE on Monday eliminated 120 jobs in its Virginia and New York offices, according to an executive inside the company. The cuts represent about 17% of the unit's 700 staff members, and the majority are said to involve account services, administrative functions and planning. The downsizing comes as AOL undergoes sweeping changes in its top management and organization as a result of its poor financial performance in the wake of the AOL and Time Warner's merger last year.

  • The Music & Media Group of Vivendi Universal Net USA today announced the appointment of ALLISON CORSON MELLON as Vice President of Western Sales. She is responsible for managing the group’s West Coast advertising sales teams and maximizing advertising and sponsorship revenue from VUNet USA’s popular network of music and media websites: MP3.com, RollingStone.com, GetMusic.com, MP4.com and EMusic.com. Based in Los Angeles, Mellon reports directly to Terry Ash, the group’s executive vice president of national sales. Mellon joins VUNet USA from ValueClick, Inc. where she was Vice President of Western Region Sales. While at ValueClick, she provided the foundation for a brand product strategy in addition to day-to-day management of the sales team.

  • BILL WHITEHEAD, regional president of the Americas for Bates, has resigned. David Hearn, 46, who joined in March as chairman and CEO of Bates Worldwide, will assume Whitehead's responsibilities. Hearn, formerly chief executive of Australian-owned food company Goodman Fielder, was tapped by Cordiant Communications Group CEO Michael Bungey to build the profile of Bates North America and win global business. Whitehead's resignation follows the loss of the agency's $160 million Hyundai creative and media account.

  • Arnold Executive Vice President/Creative Director MATT SMITH has resigned effective July 1. He will be replaced by creative directors Bruce Gifford and Fred Burgos who transferred from Arnold in Boston last year. During his eight year tenure at the McLean, Va., shop, Smith worked on campaigns for BBC America, Choice Hotels International and The Washington Post. Smith will open his own shop in Washington, D.C.

  • JOHN GAFFNEY was been named to the newly created post of Chief Operating Officer of Havas Advertising's Media Planning Group USA, the company announced this week. Formerly president of arnoldMPG, Boston, Gaffney will oversee all account service groups at MPG divisions. MPG USA has 11 offices and claims billings of $3.2 billion.

  • Forbes.com has today announced that JANETT KENNEDY HAAS has joined its New York sales team as an account manager, with responsibility for New York area accounts. Prior to joining Forbes.com, Kennedy Haas worked at Ziff Davis Media for more than five years, most recently as Eastern Associate Publisher of Interactive Week. Previously she held positions at IDG and CMP publications. Also, NANCY STERLING has been appointed Forbes.com Midwest Manager, in Chicago, IL. Her sales territory covers the Midwest. Sterling joined Forbes in May 1997 where she was the Washington, D.C. advertising manager for Forbes magazine. Previously she was regional manager at McGraw-Hill, where she worked on Aviation Week & Space Technology for eight years.

  • The Yellow Pages Integrated Media Association has announced the election of three members to its Board of Directors. They are SUSAN SNOWDEN, Senior Vice President of Telecom Marketing at R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., GERARD DIPIPPO, President of DataNational/Volt Directory Systems; and PETER BROADBENT, Chief Operating Officer of Wahlstrom Group.

  • IAN ROSS has been named senior director, eastern regional advertising sales for Disney Online, which is the No. 1 kids and community family online entertainment destination. Ross brings more than 20 years of sales experience to the Disney Online team. Most recently, he held several senior sales positions with the online properties of travel industry leader Sabre. There, he opened the East coast sales office for Preview Travel, the predecessor of Travelocity, and built the media sales unit for GetThere.com. In his new position, Ross will lead advertising and sponsorship sales efforts in New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southern U.S. regions for the Disney.com, FamilyFun.com and Movies.com Internet sites. He will report to Pamela Raley, vice president of advertising and sponsorship sales at Disney Online, and will oversee the group’s Eastern region sales team.

  • Longtime television sales and marketing executive AL COHEN has been named Vice President-General Sales Manager of Charter Media, a full-service company specializing in non-traditional media properties. Before joining Charter Media, a division of The Charter Group, Cohen was director of advertising sales and marketing for Associated Television, a westcoast-based television syndication company. Throughout his career he has held several senior positions in the television industry, including Sales Manager, TVRC Corp, an unwired network television company; Director of Sales Research, at then startup Fox Broadcasting Co.; and Director of Sports Marketing at the ABC Television Network, where he pioneered the concept of added value marketing and merchandising. At Charter, he will focus on increasing non-traditional and promotional revenue through new business opportunities and the cross-platforming of various Charter properties.

  • Regal Entertainment Group, a leading motion picture exhibitor owning and operating the largest theatre circuit in the United States under the Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatres and Edwards Theatres brands, has appointed former ESPN/ABC Sports Executive CLIFFORD MARKS, President, Marketing and Sales of Regal CineMedia. Marks, who is based in New York, will oversee the development and expansion of Regal CineMedia’s advertising, sales, promotion and marketing business. Marks has spent the last 13 years at ESPN/ABC Sports, most recently as Senior Vice President overseeing its $2.0 billion sales organization.

  • Omnicom Group elected four directors Tuesday at its annual meeting of shareholders in New York. Leonard S. Coleman Jr., Peter Foy and Gary Roubos were re-elected, and Robert Clark, dean of Harvard University Law School, became a new member. Their new terms expire in 2005. At the same time, two longtime directors, Allen Rosenshine, worldwide chairman and CEO of BBDO, and Keith Reinhard, worldwide chairman of DDB, resigned their seats, while five others - James Cannon, Bernard Brochand, Tom Harrison, Michael Greenlees and Jean-Marie Dru - did not stand for re-election. That leaves a board with 11 members -- down from 17 last year, with just two from inside Omnicom (CEO John Wren, chairman Bruce Crawford) and the rest from outside businesses.

  • TrafficMarketplace, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal, has recently named KRISTIAN WILSON to the role of Marketing Director. In this role, Wilson will be accountable for new product development as well as management of major web publisher relationships. Wilson previously held similar media roles with Seattle based Avenue A, as well as Publicis-Seattle, and THINK Seattle.

  • The publishing side at Newsweek has undergone several high-level changes. In January 2001, publisher CAROLYN WALL was reassigned to the post of Director of Marketing and Communications as part of a restructuring. Wall left Newsweek last May. MARK UPDEGROVE, Newsweek's U.S. publisher for less than a year, has also left the company. Updegrove, a longtime Time Inc. exec, had been president of Time Canada prior to joining the Washington Post Co. title last June.

  • World Publications CEO Terry Snow announced that TY SAWYER, the editor of Primedia's Skin Diver, has been named editor of World's Sport Diver. Pierce Hoover, Sport Diver's editor since the magazine's inception in 1993, will be promoted to editor-in-chief. Sawyer, set to join the team in June, will work on all editorial aspects of Sport Diver. In addition, he will serve as the magazine's dive travel expert and industry liaison.

  • The Broadcast Pioneers of Colorado announced today that TOM MULVEY, Columnist at Advertising & Marketing Review magazine, was elected Chairman of the Board for 2002-2003. Mulvey has served on the Board since May of 2000. Meanwhile, FRED HOBBS, Head of Public Relations Associates, was reelected President of the Broadcast Pioneers for another year.

  • CrownPeak Technology, the premier content management ASP, announced the appointment of e-business sales and marketing veteran ROB ROSE as Vice President, Sales and Marketing. Rose joins CrownPeak from Ignited Minds, where he was Vice President of Strategic Planning, managing the agency's strategic direction, business development and new service offerings, and contributing to development of the firm's creative, results-oriented Internet strategies.

  • TYLER BRULE stepped down today as editorial director of the Wallpaper* Group, publisher of design magazines Wallpaper* and Spruce, which are published in the U.K. by Time Inc.'s IPC Media. According to Lisa Granatstein, Brule will be succeeded on an interim basis by Christina Ferrari, former Teen People managing editor.

  • Harmonic Communications, a marketing and media optimization company, today announced that G. MICHAEL SIEVERT has joined its board of directors. In addition to Michael Sievert, current Harmonic board members are Mark Kvamme, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Harmonic, Marc Andreessen, Chairman of LoudCloud, and Rob Burgess, Chief Executive Officer of Macromedia.
