'Breaking Bad' Episodes To Have Speedy Release In U.K./Ireland

As the final stretch of AMC's “Breaking Bad” episodes unfolds starting next month, Netflix will make them available in the U.K. and Ireland the day after broadcast in the U.S. All previous seasons of the AMC hit are already available on the service.

"Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan stated that Netflix has been “instrumental” in helping build interest in the show, "particularly in the U.K. and Ireland."

Netflix doesn’t break out international subscribers by country, but in the recent second quarter, it had a net addition of 610,000 -- down from the 690,000 in the same period the year before. At the end of the quarter, it had over 7.7 million subscribers to its streaming service.

Netflix has been pushing harder to acquire exclusive programming and offer originals, where series such as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black” apparently have resonated in all territories. On an investor call this week, head of content Ted Sarandos said “proportionally to our sub base, our subs overseas are excited about these shows at roughly the same levels as they are in the U.S.”

Netflix will soon launch in the Netherlands, expanding its European presence.

By using data for its streaming use, Netflix offers a report on global Internet speeds. On average, the U.K. and U.S. are about the same, with Ireland slightly lower. But all are slower than the Nordic countries, although they top Mexico’s average.
