Google has introduced a new My Tracks application that runs on Android-powered cell phones such as the T-Mobile G1.
The app can track outdoor activities through GPS. It records the
route on Google maps that people take when cycling, hiking, jogging or skiing, and serves up live statistics such as elevation, speed and distance. Users can store or share the stats.
My Track
also lets users send performance statistics to Google Docs to build a training history, as well as mark places and describe activities for others to discover on Google Maps. The application is
available for download through Android Market. Users install the application and hit "Start recording" from the menu. My Tracks was developed as a 20% engineering endeavor, where Google engineers are
allotted time to design and develop pet projects.--Laurie Sullivan
