H-P Offers MySpace Print Function

Michael Mendenhall, CMO of Hewlett-Packard, said the company has embedded an HP-branded print function on MySpace pages. The button allows users to easily print and share images with one another.

Mendenhall said it brings "a lot of impressions" that reach one of H-P's targets: young, tech-savvy consumers.

Weaving a sponsored print button into MySpace serves as another example of how aggressive News Corp. is in looking for ways to monetize the social networking giant.

This doesn't make a lot of sense using the low-res, rather poor quality of pictures uploaded to MySpace. When customers receive their printed pictures back, they'll be very fuzzy and have lots of artifacts.

Most people don't know that you can't just take a pic on the Web and print it on a high-res color laser unless there's at least 200dpi at the size they are printed at.

A typical pic on MySpace is maybe 4" x 6" and only 72dpi. To make that look good by HP, the pic would need to be output at less than wallet-size!
