Ryan Calo, Residential Fellow, Center for Internet and Society Stanford Law School is making an interesting point about the relative threat of “privacy†vs. plain old creepiness on the OMMA privacy debate panel.
After a number of speakers noted the difference between violations of consumer privacy, and the “creepiness†of targeting them based on their behavior, Calo asserted, “There is a false dichotomy here: Real privacy harm, or is it just creepy. Creepy matters.â€
To prove that point, Calo noted that, “In New York, if someone sells you a house, and it’s haunted, you can get a rescission.â€
Now, that’s spooky.
